About the book

Whatever your status, education, or background, The Extraordinary Power of Being Average demonstrates how being average can be your superpower—you just need to know how to use it. Renowned physician, award-winning educator, and successful entrepreneur, Mel Herbert, MD. believes that average people have a special power, and if they tap into that power, they can do extraordinary things.

At times autobiographical, recounting his tough childhood in the Australian outback with an abusive father and alcoholic mother, Herbert’s colorful storytelling also takes us through his years in medical school and residency, and to his founding one of the most successful medical education companies in the world.

Herbert writes, “Most people are just like you. Use that knowledge to help yourself, and others, become extraordinary.” You can do this, he suggests, by . . .

  • ï‚·Showing empathy and kindness

  • Learning from your mistakes and those of othersï‚·

  • Working hard and delaying gratificationï‚·

  • Cultivating the “G factor” – a compassionate global worldviewï‚·

  • Staying humble and teachableï‚·

  • Surrounding yourself with like-minded peopleï‚·

  • ï‚· Remembering what you do matters

With equal parts humor and compassion, Herbert weaves his message of “embracing our averageness” throughout this entertaining autobiographical collection of real-life stories, proving that it is the rule, not the exception, that average people from humble beginnings go on to do extraordinary things.
